The Wolf Age - James Enge

"As SFScope, agent Michael Kabongo, and the author himself have already reported, we've just completed an agreement with James Enge (via the OnyxHawke agency), to publish a third Morlock Ambrosius novel, this one titled The Wolf Age. The Wolf Age is a third stand-alone adventure featuring his wandering swordsman/master maker Morlock, after the forthcoming This Crooked Way, and the coming-really-soon Blood of Ambrose."

Blood Of Ambrose - James Enge

Apparently an audible version, with the usual dodgy DRM rubbish.

Caliban and His Mirror - James Enge

"Fantasy is most effective when it acts through symbols that rest pretty deep in the awareness (or beneath the awareness, if you buy into the whole subconscious thing). At the center of every adult’s emotional life is a struggle for autonomy that occurs in adolescence. One may be struggling against well-meaning (or not so well-meaning) caregivers who are reluctant to surrender their authority. One may be raised in perfect environment that encourages autonomy and self-responsibility, but one still has to go out and face the world, make one’s place in it. Somehow, this is part of everyone’s story."

SF Scope Interview With - James Enge

"I'm glad you like him. Morlock snuck into a long and hopelessly stupid multistage novel that I was writing thirty or so years ago. Everything else in those books eventually went into the ever-hungry maw of the writer's best friend, but I kept returning to Morlock and messing about with his biography and his world. In some ways, he's depressing, I guess: he's a drunk who's trying to keep from drinking; he's faced a lot of frustrations and personal disasters. But he enjoys exercising his considerable talents, and once he decides to do something he never gives up."

Reading the Text - James Enge

"Would you mind describing what the process was like for you in getting this novel published?

Well, I’ve been writing forever. I started with the usual multi-volume imitation of Tolkien, got bored with it and moved on. After I finally published some stories in the fantasy magazine Black Gate, I decided it was time to go back and work on a novel, which became Blood of Ambrose. It spent a couple of years moldering in various slush-piles until I got an agent, Michael Kabongo of the OnyxHawke Agency. Then, almost instantly, he sold Blood of Ambrose and a partially-written sequel to Lou Anders of Pyr. Now Blood of Ambrose and the sequel, This Crooked Way, have both been released and I’m working on the third book in the series, tentatively titled The Wolf Age. So I waited a while for things to come together, but in the end they came together with stunning speed."

Michael A. Ventrella Interview with - James Enge

"VENTRELLA: What are your favorite fantasy novels? Favorite authors? Why?

ENGE: Tolkien, Leiber, Zelazny, Le Guin, Brackett, Vance. Zelazny has a great line in THE HAND OF OBERON. He actually speaks to his main character, Corwin, and he says that he’s writing “a philosophical romance shot through with elements of horror and morbidity.” I think that’s what all these guys do, to some extent, and that’s what I’m trying to do. I coined the term philorohorrmorbmance for it once, but it didn’t catch on for some reason, so I usually say I write sword-and-sorcery."
